There are many crystals, minerals out there, over 4,500 (and counting). And there are fake crystals out there, and it is hard to find out if your crystals are legit. I prefer not to work with dyed or fake crystals but sometimes (with reasons).
Here are some crystal that is fake or not natural:
Here are some crystal that is fake or not natural:
Crackle Quartz: These are very famous (well, infamous) in the gift shops or museums or those "fill a bag" crystals. These are very easy to find. What they do is take a low grade quartz, heat it up, put it in a dye bath and tumble it again! They do have the properties of quartz but the dye could affect the properties!
Rainbow Agate: Agate is one of the easily dyed crystals. Not all agates are dyed. But if you do see agates like blue, red, orange, purple agate, 99.9% it is a fake. The picture (top) is a dyed blue agate slice. But the picture (below) is a natural blue lace agate. That's the real earth power!
More crystal fakes....
Aura Quartz: Angel Aura, Opal Aura, Flame Aura, Tanzan/Tanzanite Aura, Tangerine Aura, etc...
Want to know how they make this? They take quartz, heat it, bond it with metals (gold, titanium, etc..) in a
vacuum chamber (Over 900 fahrenheit) and sometimes it doesn't turn out great. That's because they loose a lot of the quartz during the process. That's why its so expensive!
(Left) There is a natural crystal like this called Anandalite™ (Trademarked by Heaven & Earth)
which is natural quartz with rhodium coating (naturally coated).
Anandalite™ usually comes in stalactite and stalagmite form

Citrine
Citrine is one of the most popular crystal in the methaphysical community and the gems&jewelry community (jewelry, fashion). But you may not know that the citrine your holding is fake! Here is a picture (Right) of the citrine you might be familiar. That is actually amethyst, yup! They heat amethyst in an oven (not your home oven but those ovens at the mine) and wait for it to turn into golden color. But there is a natural citirine (bottom) from the Congo. Now that's a natural citrine, baked inside the earth. |
Green Quartz
You might have heard about green aventurine but you might have heard about green quartz. If you have seen green quartz like this (bottom) well, that's a total rip off! They heat milky quartz, re-grow it again and sometimes add dye.
